Rural driveway construction in Taupō and the South Waikato
New driveways, entranceways and reshapes on rural and lifestyle properties. Formed, drained and metalled so they hold up under a stock truck, not just a car.

What does a rural driveway from Trident Earthmoving involve?
We build new driveways and entranceways, and rebuild tired ones, across Taupō and the South Waikato. The formation is cut and crowned so water sheds, culverts and table drains go in where the water actually runs, then metal is laid in layers and rolled. We supply and cart the metal with our own truck and trailer, or win it from a pit on your property.
Why driveways fail
A rural driveway lives a hard life. Stock trucks, the tanker, a loaded trailer, and a Waikato winter on top. Most of the ones that turn to porridge were never formed properly underneath, or the water had nowhere to go. Getting it right is mostly about what happens before the metal goes on. Shape the formation so water sheds off it, put a culvert where the water actually runs, and compact each layer instead of tipping metal on soft ground and hoping.
The formation does the work
Metal on soft, flat ground disappears into it. We cut and crown the formation so water sheds off, sort the drainage, then lay metal in layers and roll it. That is why it lasts.
Metal off your own place
Where there is a workable pit on the property we can win metal on site, which usually saves a good deal on cartage. Where there is not, we supply it and cart it in on our own truck and trailer.

Driveways that survive winter
We build new driveways and entranceways from scratch, reshape and re-metal tired ones, and put in the culverts and crossings that go with them. Formation is cut and shaped first, drainage sorted, then metal laid in layers and rolled.
We can win metal on farm where there is a pit, which usually costs a lot less than carting it in. Where there is not, we supply the metal and cart it ourselves with our own tip truck and trailer.
How a driveway job runs
- Walk the line. We look at where the water goes, what the ground is like and what traffic it has to carry.
- Quote it. One price, with the culverts and drainage included rather than added later.
- Form it up. Cut and shape the formation, sort the drainage, put in any culverts.
- Metal and roll. Metal laid in layers and compacted properly, not just tipped on.
- Check the fall. We make sure water runs off it before we leave.
What does a new driveway cost?
Most of a driveway quote is what happens before any metal goes on. The surface is the cheap part. These are the things that move the number:
- What is under it. Firm ground takes metal straight away. Soft or peaty ground has to be dug out and replaced first, or nothing you put on top will hold.
- Drainage and culverts. Wherever water crosses the line, a culvert goes in. This is the difference between a driveway that lasts and one that washes out in the first big rain.
- Metal and cartage. How much metal it needs and how far it has to travel. If there is a workable pit on the property, that changes the number a lot.
- What has to drive on it. A driveway for cars and one carrying a stock truck or a concrete truck are built to different depths.
- Length and width. The obvious one, and usually not the deciding factor.
We quote on site with the formation, the drainage and the metal shown separately, so you can see where the money actually goes.
Where we work
Based at Whakamaru, we cover Taupō, the South Waikato, Waipā, Hamilton and out to Rotorua and the King Country. Here is the patch, and what we tend to see on the ground.
Common questions
Still not sure? Give us a call and we will talk it through.
Yes. We supply and cart metal with our own tip truck and trailer, so the driveway, the metal and the delivery come from one contractor. Where there's a workable pit on the property we can win it there instead, which usually saves on cartage.
Usually yes, and usually it is a drainage problem rather than a metal problem. More metal on top of a drive that holds water just sinks into it. We reshape the formation so it sheds, sort the drainage, then re-metal and roll it.
It depends on the ground underneath and what the driveway has to carry. A lifestyle block drive taking cars needs less than one taking a stock truck or a tanker. We work it out from the formation, not from a standard figure.
If there is a workable pit on the property, often yes, and it usually saves a good deal on cartage. We will have a look and tell you honestly whether the material is up to what you want it for.
