Earthworks and drainage contractors in Rotorua

Earthworks, drainage and retaining around the lakes, and farm work on the dairy country at Ngongotahā, Mamaku and Reporoa. About an hour from our Whakamaru yard.

Deep drainage trench with trench shields in place for safe excavation

Rotorua is the eastern edge of our patch, about an hour from the yard. Pumice ground, lake sections with a step in them, geothermal areas that need care, and dairy farms on the flats around the district. We come across for the jobs that suit us.

What we do here

Lakes, pumice and dairy flats

Rotorua gives us three kinds of work: residential earthworks and retaining on the lake sections, drainage and civil on pumice ground, and farm work on the dairy country around the district.

Drainage and civil

Stormwater, trenching and infrastructure work on pumice ground, with trench shields, grade control and engineer sign-off, for council and head contractors.

House pads and retaining walls

Building platforms and retaining walls on the terraced sections around the lakes, built to the engineer's design with the drainage in behind.

Farm earthworks

Races, tracks, feed pads and effluent work on the dairy farms at Ngongotahā, Mamaku and Reporoa, planned around milking.

Working around Rotorua

Rotorua sits on the same pumice country as Taupō, with one extra thing to think about: geothermal ground. Most of the district is ordinary free draining pumice and ash that digs easily and compacts well in layers. In the geothermal areas the ground can be hot, acidic and unstable, and any earthworks there needs to be planned with that in mind and checked with the council first.

Around the lakes the sections are often terraced, which means house pads come with retaining walls and a plan for the stormwater, the same as Taupō. On pumice, a wall or a batter without proper drainage behind it fails fast, so we build the drainage in from the start.

Out on the flats it is dairy: Ngongotahā, Mamaku and down the Reporoa valley towards our side of the district. Races, feed pads, effluent work and drainage, planned around milking. Rotorua Lakes Council handles consents in the district, with Bay of Plenty Regional Council rules on anything near the lakes and streams.

Questions we get from around here

The things people around Rotorua ask us before a job starts.

Do you work on geothermal ground?

Carefully, and only after checking with the council. Geothermal areas can be hot, acidic and unstable, so we look at the site and the council's hazard maps before we commit to anything.

Which parts of the Rotorua district do you cover?

Rotorua itself, the lakes, Ngongotahā, Mamaku and down the Reporoa valley towards Taupō. It is about an hour from our yard, so we plan Rotorua work in blocks rather than half days.

Do you do retaining walls on lake sections?

Yes. Terraced lake sections are a regular retaining job for us. We build to the engineer's design with drainage coil and free draining backfill behind every wall, and sort where the stormwater goes.
