Finished timber retaining wall beside a new build in Taupō

Taupō is growing fast, with new subdivisions at Wharewaka, Kinloch and Acacia Bay and a lot of terraced sections above the lake. That means pads, retaining and stormwater, and a council that expects the paperwork to be right.

What we do here

Subdivisions, terraced sections and civil work

Taupō work is a mix of civil and infrastructure for the council and head contractors, and residential earthworks for the builders and developers working the new subdivisions around the lake.

Civil construction

Stormwater and wastewater mains, trenching and subdivision civil on Tōtika prequalified sites, with trench shields, grade control and engineer sign-off as standard.

House pads and retaining walls

Building platforms for builders on the new subdivisions, and the retaining walls that terraced Taupō sections almost always need, built to the engineer's design.

Driveways and demolition

Driveways for new builds and lifestyle blocks, and demolition of older houses and baches making way for something new.

Working on Taupō ground

Everything around Taupō sits on pumice from the eruptions that made the lake. It is light, free draining and easy to dig, and it compacts well in layers, which makes it good ground to build on when it is handled properly. Loose, it has almost no strength, and it erodes badly wherever water concentrates. Batters, driveways and retaining walls on Taupō sections fail for that reason more than any other.

The other thing about Taupō is that the town is terraced. A lot of the residential sections above the lake have a step in them, so a house pad usually comes with a retaining wall and a plan for where the stormwater goes. We build all three together rather than leaving the wall and the drainage to someone else.

Taupō District Council handles consents and engineering sign-off. On subdivision and infrastructure work we are usually working for a head contractor or the council directly, on sites where Tōtika prequalification is the entry ticket.

Questions we get from around here

The things people around Taupō ask us before a job starts.

Do you work for builders on the new subdivisions?

Yes. House pads, site works and retaining for builders and developers is a big part of what we do in Taupō, built to the engineer's level with grade control so the inspection is straightforward.

Do you cover Kinloch and Acacia Bay?

Yes. Both are within our normal Taupō run, along with Wharewaka, Richmond Heights and the lifestyle blocks around the edge of town.

Are you prequalified for council work?

Yes. We hold Tōtika, New Zealand's national health and safety prequalification for contractors, which is what Taupō District Council and the head contractors working here check before letting a crew on site.
