Bulk excavation with timber profiles and a laser level set up for a building platform near Te Awamutu

Te Awamutu is a dairy town with a fast growing residential edge and lifestyle blocks running out to the Pirongia foothills. The catch around here is peat in the low ground, which changes how a pad or a driveway has to be built.

What we do here

New builds, lifestyle blocks and wet ground

Around Te Awamutu the work is house pads and driveways for the new builds and lifestyle blocks, and farm earthworks on the dairy country around them, with drainage a bigger part of both than most people expect.

House pads and site works

Building platforms for builders and lifestyle block owners around Te Awamutu, Kihikihi and Ōhaupō, with the ground checked for peat before we price it.

Farm earthworks

Races, tracks, feed pads and effluent work on the dairy farms around the town, planned around milking and built to shed water.

Drainage and driveways

Farm drainage, table drains and culverts on wet ground, and rural driveways formed and drained properly before the metal goes on.

Working around Te Awamutu

Te Awamutu sits between the Waikato River and Mount Pirongia, on a mix of volcanic ash soils on the rolling ground and peat in the low lying basins, particularly around Ōhaupō and towards Hamilton. The ash country is straightforward to build on. The peat is not: it shrinks, it holds water, and it will not carry a house pad, a driveway or a race without being dug out and replaced or built around.

So the first thing we do on a Te Awamutu job is work out which ground you are on. On the farms that shapes the drainage and the race construction. On new builds it shapes the pad, and it is the difference between a quote that holds and a variation later.

Te Awamutu is in the Waipā District, so consents and engineering sign-off go through Waipā District Council. The town is growing, and a lot of our work here is for builders on new sections and for lifestyle block owners on the roads out towards Pirongia and Kihikihi.

Questions we get from around here

The things people around Te Awamutu ask us before a job starts.

How do I know if my section is on peat?

Usually the geotech report will say, and if there is not one we can tell fairly quickly with a test hole. We check before we price a pad, because peat changes the job.

Do you cover Kihikihi, Ōhaupō and Pirongia?

Yes. All three are part of our normal Te Awamutu run, along with the lifestyle blocks and farms in between.

Can you fix a paddock that will not dry out?

Usually. Wet ground is normally a high water table or water coming from uphill with no way out. Subsoil drainage and a proper outlet fixes most of it, and we walk it with you first to work out which it is.
