What we do here

Studs, dairy farms and new builds

Around Matamata the work is arenas and tracks on the thoroughbred and equestrian properties, farm infrastructure on the dairy country, and pads and driveways for the new builds and lifestyle blocks on the edges of town.

Horse arenas and tracks

Arenas cut to level, drained, compacted and rolled from the base up, plus yards, tracks and access on stud and equestrian properties.

Farm earthworks

Races, feed pads, silage pits and effluent work on the dairy farms between Matamata, Morrinsville and the Kaimai foothills, planned around milking.

House pads and driveways

Building platforms and driveways for new builds and lifestyle blocks, on ground that compacts well when it is done properly.

Working around Matamata

Matamata sits on the Hinuera formation, the old river gravels and sands the Waikato River laid down before it changed course. It is some of the freest draining ground in the region, which is one reason the studs and training tracks settled here, and why a house pad or an arena base built on it holds up well when it is compacted properly.

Arenas are a big part of what we do around Matamata. An arena is a drainage and compaction job before anything else: the base has to be cut to level, drained so water gets away, then compacted and rolled flat, because the base decides how the surface rides and how long it lasts. We build them with a laser level and a roller, and we quote the base, the drainage and the cartage separately so you can see where the money goes.

Out towards the Kaimai foothills the ground gets steeper and wetter, and the farm work shifts from flat land races to tracks, culverts and drainage. Matamata is in the Matamata-Piako District, so consents go through Matamata-Piako District Council.

Questions we get from around here

The things people around Matamata ask us before a job starts.

What size should a horse arena be?

It depends on what you ride. A standard dressage arena is 20 by 60 metres, a small one is 20 by 40, and jumping arenas are often bigger. We talk through what you actually need before we quote, because size drives the cartage and the drainage.

Do you build the drainage under an arena?

Always. An arena with nowhere for the water to go turns into a pond. We cut the base to fall, put in the drainage, then compact and roll before any surface goes on.

Do you do farm work as well as arenas?

Yes. Races, feed pads, silage pits and effluent work on the dairy farms around Matamata are regular work for us, planned around milking.
