Farm earthworks and track contractors in Te Kūiti

Tracks, culverts, crossings and slip repair on the sheep and beef country around Te Kūiti, and races and drainage on the dairy flats. Built for limestone hills and King Country rain.

Newly formed farm track running up a hill in the King Country

Te Kūiti is sheep and beef country first, with limestone hills, papa gullies and the Mangaokewa running through the town. Tracks and crossings that survive a wet winter are the bulk of what we do here.

What we do here

Hill tracks, crossings and slips

The farms around Te Kūiti are steep, the ground is limestone and papa, and the rain comes hard. That makes track formation, culverts and slip repair the jobs that matter most in this part of the King Country.

Farm tracks

Access tracks and races formed with crossfall, cut-offs and outlets so water runs off the track rather than down it. On papa that is the whole difference.

Culverts and crossings

Culverts, crossings and timber farm bridges over the streams and gullies, sized for what actually comes down here in winter.

Slip repair and retaining

Slip clearing, batter reshaping and retaining walls where a track or a building has been undermined by a wet winter.

Working around Te Kūiti

Te Kūiti is in the heart of the Waitomo limestone country, and the farms around it are a mix of limestone hills and papa mudstone gullies with a thin layer of topsoil over both. Limestone drains and holds a batter well. Papa does the opposite: it sheds water when it is dry and turns to grease when it is wet, and it is why slips and slumped tracks are a normal part of a King Country winter.

The answer is the same on every track we form here: crossfall so water sheds off the running surface, cut-offs and culverts where the water actually runs, and metal laid on a formed and compacted base rather than tipped on soft ground. It costs a little more up front and it is the reason the track is still there five years later.

Te Kūiti is in the Waitomo District, so consents go through Waitomo District Council, with Waikato Regional Council rules applying to anything in or near the streams. Most of our work here is directly for farmers.

Questions we get from around here

The things people around Te Kūiti ask us before a job starts.

Can you get a machine up onto hill country?

Yes. Our CAT 313F excavators are the right size for hill tracks, and for bigger scopes we bring in hired plant. We will look at the access before we quote.

Why do my tracks turn to mud every winter?

Nearly always water running down the track instead of off it, usually on papa. We reshape the formation with crossfall, add cut-offs and culverts, and metal it on a compacted base.

Do you come out for a small job in Te Kūiti?

We plan King Country work in blocks of a few days rather than half days, because of the travel. If you have a few jobs on the farm, tell us all of them and we will do them in one visit.
