Earthworks and roading contractors in Tūrangi

Roading and civil work at the Tongariro National Park end of the lake, culverts and drainage in high rainfall country, and farm and forestry tracks. We come down when the job calls for it.

Tūrangi sits at the southern end of Lake Taupō, on the Tongariro River, where the Desert Road heads south. It is the wettest and most exposed end of our patch, and the jobs here are usually roading, drainage and track work rather than residential.

What we do here

Roading, drainage and tracks in wet country

The Tūrangi end of the lake gets more rain and more weather than anywhere else we work. Roading, culverts and drainage are the bulk of it, with farm and forestry track work on the country around the town.

Roading and civil

Roading formation, culverts and civil work at the Tongariro National Park and Desert Road end, for council and head contractors, with traffic management where the road is live.

Drainage and culverts

Culverts, table drains and stormwater sized for the rainfall down here, not for the Waikato. Getting the water away is the whole job in Tūrangi.

Farm and forestry earthworks

Races, tracks and crossings on the farms and forestry blocks between Tūrangi and the lake, formed to shed water and stand up to a Central Plateau winter.

Working at the Desert Road end

Tūrangi is different to the rest of our patch. It is higher, wetter and colder, with the Tongariro River running through the town and the mountains right behind it. Rainfall down here is well above what the northern end of the lake gets, and it arrives hard. Any earthworks that does not shed water properly gets found out fast.

The ground is volcanic: pumice and ash from the Taupō and Tongariro eruptions, free draining but soft when it is saturated, which it often is. Culverts need to be bigger than you would size them further north, and formation on tracks and roads needs proper crossfall and outlets.

We have worked at the Tongariro National Park entrance and on the Desert Road, so we know what the weather does to a programme down here and we plan for it. Tūrangi is in the Taupō District, so consents go through Taupō District Council, with the Department of Conservation and the roading authority involved on some sites.

Questions we get from around here

The things people around Tūrangi ask us before a job starts.

Is Tūrangi too far for you to come?

No. It is about an hour and twenty minutes from our yard, so we do not come down for a half day, but for a roading job, a drainage job or a few days of farm work it is well within our patch.

Do you do roading work near the National Park?

Yes. We have worked at the Tongariro National Park entrance and on the Desert Road, with traffic management on live roads and the paperwork that goes with working near DOC land.

Why do culverts keep washing out down here?

Because they are usually sized for Waikato rainfall, not Central Plateau rainfall. We size culverts and outlets for what actually comes down here, and shape the formation so water gets to them.
